Defender Savio Kabugo is expected to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a setback in his recovery and rehabilitation from a deep cut to his shin.
Kabugo has been out since being a late exclusion from the squad in the build up to our away trip to neighbours Kyetume FC last month.
The defender suffered an open cut to his sheen, and was given time away to see the wound which required stitching up to properly heal, but a recent problem has escalated the issue.
He was expected to return to training this week, but an infection to the area around the wound has made recovery difficult for him, and could be out of action for an extended period.
As a result, the Leaders are fearful that they may have to play out the remainder of the campaign without one of their key defenders.
Kabugo has started 12 of our 24 games this season, and has been on the bench on two occasions, with injuries in different stages of the season limiting his involvement.
The Cranes defender produced one of the moments of the season, rolling back the years with a classic finish in our hard fought 1-1 draw against promotion chasing Mbale Heroes in March.
The loss of Kabugo represents a significant setback in Lugazi’s fight for promotion to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
He is now one of only two players who will be ruled out of action for an extended period, with goalkeeper Abraham Opio the other player not available to be called upon.
Having picked up 44 points from 24 matches, Lugazi are flying high in sixth place, three points off the top, after suffering a league low two defeats all season.
Gerald Efiti’s men are well in the mix of a six-club chase for the three promotions, who are separated by nine points with three matches to play.
They will look to build on their 2-0 away victory over Kigezi Homeboyz last week when they host bottom side Young Elephants at the Lugazi FC stadium in Najjembe on Sunday.
