Savio Kabugo rolled back the years as he stepped up to score a late equaliser at the Mbale Municipal Stadium to secure a crucial point for Lugazi FC against Mbale Heroes.
But for Kabugo, this goal was more than just a point on the scoreboard—it was a tribute to his late close friend, Humphrey Mayanja (brother to top artistes Jose Chameleone, Weasel and Pallaso.
“It was a special moment for me,” Kabugo shared with the club media. “Scoring a goal as a defender is not very common, but sometimes you have to step up and do the job for the team.”
The journey to that moment was filled with emotion and determination. As Mbale Heroes took the lead in the first half, Kabugo and his teammates knew they had to fight harder.
“Our objective was to try and get the three points, but this is a tough place to come, and we had to fight and get a result at least,” he added.
But Kabugo’s goal meant more than just securing a draw—it was a poignant reminder of another moment in his career. In the 89th minute, Kabugo seized the opportunity.
“As I went upfront, I was confident I could make the difference, and thank God I was in the right moment,” he explained.
“It brings back many memories for me,” he shared. “I remember with the national team at the African Nations Championship (CHAN), I popped up with a similar moment.”
The captain later revealed that the goal was a dedication to Mayanja who he described as ‘an elder brother’, with whom they share deep memories going back to his younger years.
Mayanja was pronounced dead on Saturday, after a long battle with cancer, which he was diagnosed with last year as he travelled to Boston, USA.
Kabugo received the news shortly after the final whistle, which definitely rattled our central defender.
Kabugo expressed, “I want to dedicate the goal to my brother and friend Humphrey Mayanja, who passed away.
“I am sure he would be the happiest seeing me score. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.
Mayanja’s burial will take place on Wednesday at 2 PM in Kalangaalo, Singo off Mubende Road.
Lugazi FC send our deepest condolences to the late Mayanja’s family and friends.
