BetPawa FUFA Big League Result:
Lugazi FC 1-0 Calvary FC

Lugazi FC staked their claim on the BetPawa FUFA Big League promotion race, notching a crucial 1-0 win over Calvary FC, extending their unbeaten run to 12 league games.

The Sunday showdown at the Lugazi FC stadium in Najjembe was decided by a decisive second-half strike from Abdul Kalanzi, marking a significant moment in Lugazi FC’s season.

Having been held to three consecutive draws, including a 1-1 draw at home to Booma FC 23 days ago, the home side took to their home turf knowing that victory was pertinent to getting their season back on track.

Head coach Richard Makumbi had talked up his players and fans, urging them to come together to harness their collective glee to dismantle their visitors.

And with the stands in full voice from kick-off, the hosts started the game with intent, eager to assert their dominance early on.

Brian Ssali was first to test tested the opposition’s defence with a long-range effort just 12 minutes into the game. But there was an early substitution in the 25th minute with Alvin Birungi replacing Derrick Ochen.

Despite several attempts from both sides to break the deadlock, the first half ended goalless, setting the stage for a dramatic second half.

Makumbi then made a strategic move, introducing Sam Ssemugugu and Mitala Mubarak in place of Sam Nsubuga and Ssali, looking to inject fresh energy into the team’s attack.

The breakthrough came in the 54th minute when Kalanzi expertly converted a free kick, sending the home fans into a frenzy.

The goal injected new life into the match, with the Leaders pushing for a second to secure their lead.

Mitala and Ssemugugu combined well in the midfield, creating a great opportunity that Ssemugugu sent just wide.

As the match neared its conclusion, Lugazi made a final substitution, bringing on Wasswa Paul for Moses Buga in the 83rd minute to help see out the game.

The fresh legs and strategic changes proved effective, as the team held on to secure an eighth clean sheet of the season in the process.

This victory not only extended Lugazi FC’s unbeaten run but also closed the gap to just three points behind league leaders Police FC, who are set to return to action on March 31 against Calvary.

Looking ahead, Lugazi FC will make a short trip to Mukono to face Kyetume FC at the end of the month.
