Stanbic Uganda Cup R64
Mayuge United Vs Lugazi FC
Wembley Play Ground
Kick-off: 3pm
Like the fabled trip to Acholi United last season, Lugazi FC will get another memorable experience this Wednesday after being drawn against Mayuge United in the Uganda cup round of 64. Mayuge United sits in the fourth tier of Uganda’s football pyramid and has progressed to this stage in the competition for the first time. Needless to say, this is the biggest match in the team’s history.
Wembley play ground in Mayuge town has seen third division teams arrive as visitors early this year in the competition’s preliminary rounds, but the Leaders are by miles the biggest attraction this play ground has ever seen.
Obviously, a date against Mayuge United is just about the perfect draw for Lugazi FC as the fourth division side presents a great opportunity for Steven Bogere’s men to progress to the next round for the first time in recent times.
It’s two straight exits at the round of 64 for the Leaders in the past two seasons – to Express FC in the 2022/23 campaign and to Acholi United last season but this was due to the fact that the team was more inclined on gaining promotion to the Uganda premier league, which we duly achieved last season.
Currently occupying the 12th place in the topflight, moving on to the next rounds is now paramount, and it will be even more special should we make a deep run in this tournament.
The magic of the cup can yield crazy results sometimes, but the lads are fully equipped, and yearning to make this a lopsided affair in Mayuge. And by the look of things, this is set to go down as another fun event that will be fondly remembered by the players and fans alike.
Mayuge United apparently plays in the Mayuge district fourth division league, sitting atop of the log with nine points after three games. Its Uganda cup journey includes victories at home over Jinja North United and Stone City (Walukuba Corporates), and an away win over Bugiri East Enders on penalties – all opponents are competing in the Eastern Regional League this season.
Team News:
Coach Steven Bogere and Oliver Mbekeka have a full squad to choose from after the recovery of goalkeeper Juma Mutebi from an injury that kept him out of the game against Bright Stars.
Speaking after the last preparatory session, Oliver Mbekeka said they have worked enough on the link up play of the team and the Leaders are in the right shape to score lots of goals starting tomorrow.
“Goalkeeper Juma Mutebi is back, the team is in good shape and there is vibe in the camp.”
“We have not been scoring enough yet conceding one or two goals. We have now worked upon that challenge. We have worked on connecting the midfield to the attack in the quickest way, and then scoring well-built and planned goals.”
“So far, we expect the players to implement what we have taught them on the pitch and we expect to win against Mayuge United.”
Assistant captain Nelson Mandela said the team is pumped up to qualify to the next round.
“The last two seasons had us not go beyond the round of 64 but this season, we are going to make it – basing on the training we have had, and the strong attitude and character the players have developed recently.”
“They are exhibiting a good attitude, the morale is there and we aim at getting that win, and qualifying to the next round.”
“The tactics in training have been good, there is improvement in the team, and the concentration is there and we expect to win tomorrow.”
