Ronald Ssempala scored a late goal to snatch a -1 draw against Black Power FC, at the Lugazi Stadium in Najjembe on Saturday, as the hosts missed an opportunity to close in on BetPawa FUFA Big League leaders Police FC.

The match was a crucial one for Lugazi, who are in the race for promotion to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

The Leaders had the better of he opportunities earlier on as they looked to make their home ground advantage count.

Moses Buga showed his brilliance in the 21st minute as he dribbled past his marker and attempting a shot, but it was intercepted.

Abdul Kalanzi also made a notable attempt in the 33rd minute with a hard shot from long range, but it was stopped by the goalkeeper.

Despite Lugazi’s efforts, it was Black Power FC who broke the deadlock.

Defender Isaac Okello scored his fourth goal of the season deep into the first half added time, putting the visitors ahead against the run of play.

In the second half, Lugazi head coach Richard Makumbi made strategic changes to turn the tide in the ream’s favour.

Alvin Birungi was introduced for Freedom Mungudit 10 minutes into the half. The 66th minute saw a double substitution as Moses Buga and Bayo Ali made way for Ssempala and Mubarak Mitala, respectively.

Another double substitution followed in the 77th minute, with Kiryowa Shafik and Brian Ssali coming in for Sam Ssemugugu and Derrick Mwanje.

The tactical changes paid off in the 83rd minute when Ssempala found the back of the net with a powerful shot, leveling the score line at 1-1.

Despite their efforts, Lugazi missed the chance to close the gap on league leaders Police FC to within a point.

They remain second in the standings with 36 points, four points behind the Cops, with both teams having played 19 games.

Lugazi FC will look to bounce back when they return to action on April 14, 2024, when they make a short trip to visit Kyetume FC at Nakisunga.
