Lugazi FC, also known as ‘The Leaders’, fought hard to their third consecutive home win as they overcame a well organized Booma FC courtesy of a slender 1-0 scoreline on Thursday 15th, December 2022 at Lugazi FC Stadium, Najjembe.
Both sides had good spells in which they could have scored in the first half of the game, but it ended 0-0.
The away side, Booma FC, worked hard to keep out the home side, Lugazi FC, for much of the second half, and an intervention from second half substitute, Gerald Ogweti was needed, as he shot past the Booma’s goalie, putting Lugazi into the lead in the 73rd minute.
“We, as the technical staff, have managed to win this game through preparing well. We took time, watched their videos and knew how they play,” Coach Dani Ssegawa said.
“We had to scratch our heads to plan for the game well, and that is why we have emerged victorious,” Coach Ssegawa added.
Coach Ssegawa said that Lugazi FC benching Gerald Ogweti and Charles Bob Akena was all part of their game plan.
“It was our game plan to start them on the bench because they [recently] had injuries and were not training well,” Coach Ssegawa pointed out.
“We have a plan of beefing up the squad in January because the players we have were not used to travelling long distances, and that is why you see many of them getting injuries,” Coach Ssegawa noted.
Elijah Brian Ssali, the assistant team captain for Lugazi, found it important to note that the team effort and the collective efforts of the supporters, club management, technical staff and players as the key factors that guided them to the victory.
“We always work together, starting from the technical staff, players and the supporters. That is why we have managed to earn this much needed win,” Ssali noted.
“The coaches took us through the corrections of the mistakes we made in the game we played away from home, and thank God, we did it the way they prepared us,” Ssali added.
“When we have supporters behind us, they always give us morale and courage. We promise them that we will always put up a good fight to keep the pride,” Ssali vowed.
William Kyeswa, the Lugazi FC head coach, made four (4) changes from Starting XI in last week’s one-all draw away from home, replacing Muhammad Lubega, Gerald Ogweti, Derrick Mwanje and Charles Bob Akena with Ben Ntege, Shafic Kiryowa, Faizo Matovu and David Kiiza.
Ten (10) minutes into the second half, Coach Kyeswa brought on Gerald Ogweti, Charles Bob Akena and Andrew Isaac Tamale for Shafic Kiryowa, David Kiiza and Tito Titus Lubega.
It took Gerald Ogweti eighteen (18) minutes on the field of play to strike the ball into the opponent’s net and put Lugazi FC into lead, and his lone goal was the only difference between the two sides at fulltime.
The win takes Lugazi FC into eighth (8th) position on the 2022/23 FUFA Big League (FBL) standings with thirteen (13) points from ten (1 games, six points behind the second and third placed teams, that is, Kitara FC and NEC FC respectively.
Gerald Ogweti’s goal also takes him to nine (9) for the season in the ten (10) games he has played this season.
Lugazi FC will next pay a visit to Jinja City to come up against Jinja North United FC on Thursday 22nd, December 2022 at the Kyabazinga Stadium in Bugembe.
