Lugazi FC have progressed to the round of 32 of the 52nd edition of the Stanbic Uganda Cup after defeating third division side Kisugu United 2-1 on Friday evening.

Two first half goals – including an own goal from Henry Kamya, and Freedom Mungudit’s beautiful strike at the Kiwuliliza playground in Kisugu – Kampala, were enough to see the Leaders through.

Following a lengthy period of sustained pressure from Simon Peter Mugerwa’s side, Kamya turned Ashiraf Mulindi’s cross into his own net on 18 minutes to give Lugazi FC the advantage.

Mungudit then lurched onto Richard Ayiko’s long over the top ball eight minutes later to notch in a second goal that sealed the victory for the visitors.

The hosts however pulled one back on 84 minutes through Bruno Mukwaya but Lugazi FC stood firm in defence and held onto their slim lead until the final whistle despite having a numerical disadvantage for the final part of the second half.

Goal scorer – Mungudit had been sent off in the 71st minute after a clash with an opponent.

Hamza Mulambuzi was given his debut barely hours after signing for the club, starting in the midfield alongside Amos Etoju, and his display in the middle of the park was arguably impressive.

Our next opponent in this competition will be known after FUFA conducting the draw for the round of 32.

Focus now turns to the second round of the Uganda premier league, with a trip to Police FC awaiting the Leaders on Thursday next week.
